Writing the “about me” line

The “about me” in a marriage biodata is a one- or two-sentence description of the person — their work, interests and nature — written in a natural voice. It is the only part of a biodata that is not a list of facts, so it shapes the first impression more than its length suggests.

A good “about me” line is short, specific and true. It names what the person does, one or two things they love, and a hint of their nature.

  1. Start with work or study

“Software engineer in Pune”, “Final-year MD student”, “Runs the family jewellery business in Jaipur”. It anchors the line in something real.

  2. Add one or two real interests

Choose interests the person actually spends time on — trekking, Kathak, cooking, cricket, reading — rather than generic words like “music” and “travel”.

  3. Hint at their nature

A word or phrase such as “calm”, “close to family”, “loves hosting friends” tells the other family more than a list of adjectives.

  4. Keep it to two sentences

Thirty to forty words is plenty. Anything longer belongs in the conversation.

  5. Write it in the biodata’s language

If the biodata is in Marathi or Hindi, write the line in that language too. In WowBiodata you can type it in English and use the suggested spelling, word by word.

  • “Architect in Goa who surfs, sketches and loves old churches.”
  • “Government officer (MPSC) in Aurangabad; reads widely and enjoys social work.”

Good to know

  • Read the line aloud — if it sounds like a job advert, make it simpler.
  • Let the person write or approve their own line.
  • Avoid comparisons and judgements about appearance or complexion.
  • Keep humour gentle; elders on both sides will read it.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Generic adjectives: “simple, honest, God-fearing, family-oriented” all in one line.
  • Copying an example word for word — change it to fit the person.
  • Writing a paragraph; two sentences are enough.
